Originated by Francine Shapiro, EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, is a scientifically studied model of therapy that helps incomplete traumatic experience complete by facilitating processing in the brain. Through the use of bilateral stimulation (eye movement, tapping, buzzers, sounds), the REM state (rapid eye movement) in the brain is activated. REM state is the part of our sleep where we process information from our day. While reproducing this state we can revisit traumatic experience allowing it to process into the part of the brain where we can assimilate it as memory, relieving the sense of continually living in a heightened state as if the memory were present.
