Psychological Trauma, what is it, and how can we heal it?
The essential elements in a traumatic event are: Sudden shocking impact, loss of a sense of control, loss of a sense of safety. Biologically, our bodies gear up as if in survival mode, implementing the sympathetic nervous system toward fight or flight. The brain function changes, dulling the speech center and increasing the amygdala or emotional part of the brain.
Causes of trauma are, but not limited to, events such as:
car accident, natural disaster, physical abuse, neglect, verbal abuse, witnessing violence, surgery, illness, war.
Whether or not Traumatic events lead to PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), where one is subject to flashbacks, difficulty sleeping, high anxiety, irritability, rage, is dependent upon how much support was received during or immediately after the event, how much sense of control was perceived during and after the event, and whether the body was allowed to fully move through the natural physiological processes necessary to complete the response to the event, and to then allow the memory to be stored within the less reactive part of the brain.
Treatment for Trauma:
Somatic re-membering, re-experiencing, and re-informing
Breathwork to balance the nervous system
Healing Imagery to create new neural pathways
Work with writing, voice, active physical challenges: each giving expression and a sense of power, and reclamation of Self.
